So, after reading Chapter 2 and 3 of the study guide I got the impression from Martin that you shouldn’t trust everything you read, especially annual reports or at least read it with caution and verify what you can when you can because the audience is generally investors, regulators, competitors etc so it’s potentially a marketing document. On that note, I asked a friend of mine who works at a large maritime science firm what she thought of this? The look on her face was not one of surprise. She than told me the marketing department at her firm puts together the annual report! They just ask the other departments for their input. I found this pretty funny. Your thoughts?

I found the best way to understand the concept of equity was to think of it as you would a house. House value (Assets) – Mortgage (Liabilities) = Equity.
